Friday 6th March 2020
On Friday we were supposed to have a lecture but our lecturer was feeling ill so it was cancelled. Instead, people who wished to specialise in film were given the opportunity to partake in a film workshop. It was such a great opportunity and I have been talking to everyone who would listen to me about it.
The first thing we did was learn about the '15 essential camera shots, angles and movements in filmmaking'. I took notes on the video but I know for a fact that they will not make any sense to anyone other than me so here is a hyperlink to the video:
Here is my random gibberish:
You should be aware of this
Closeup – fill the frame with the face, draw attention to the face
Extreme close up- chop up the bottom and top of face
Long shot- action, see entire body in motion
Extreme long shot – make subject look small
Medium shot – body language important
Single/solo shot
Point of view shot- audience feel like they were that person
Camera angle
Eye level- remain object, no manipulation
Low angle- subject appear more dominant
High angle- diminutive and
Top angle/ birds eye view- show location
Dutch angle- not really level, not balanced frame
Over the shoulder- confrontational
Pan and tilt- like a tennis match, audience is objective spectator
Tracking shot
Dolly- front and back
Crane
Follow action- audience feels part of it
Zoom – get closer without making an emotional statement
360-degree- showcase subject
Dolly zoom
Single take shot
After that we were told to get into groups of three or four so that we could practise using the techniques we learnt. We did some storyboarding then looked for a suitable location. It took us a while to start filming because we were trying to find a good setup but I think it was worth it. It was the first time I had ever made something like that with a group. I really learned a lot, I also did some directing and most of the filming. It was really fun. The video was edited solely by another member of the group so I haven't seen it yet. I can't wait to see the outcome, even it is bad because I would then know what to improve on. I would upload a video from the day but I have yet to receive permission from the other members from the group so I will instead just show two pictures of some material we were working with.
