Today we are supposed to be making mind maps. I was able to see the sheet that I needed to have yesterday and I saw that I hadn't answered to questions: 'What is the purpose of religion in the 21st Century' and What does the moon mean to you?' So I have decided to answer these questions. Before I started looking for sources, I watched a short silent film from 1902 called "Une voyage dans la lune" which translates to "A trip to the moon". It was very interesting and really gives you insight on how people then thought the moon was, however I am slightly skeptical as to whether how the moon was shown in the film was how they thought it was. This is because of the wizards that are the voyagers which makes me wonder whether it was just science fiction without the real beliefs of people inside.

I decided to think generally about the purpose of religion in the 21st Century. Here is what I found:

Religion is the reason why we know right from wrong and it is essential to a vibrant democratic society. Religious instructions and beliefs remain today the 'lifeblood' of society's moral ethos, they teach virtue and contribute to a more peaceful, stable and charitable society. The word religion is derived from the two Latin words "re" and "ligare" which means "to reconnect". Over 50% of religious people follow either Christianity or Islam and religion continues to impact almost every aspect of human civilisation in both positive and negative ways, it teaches people to adopt and develop higher qualities of love, mercy, generosity and kindness. The positives of religion is that it can be a source of hope and optimism, it promotes feelings of belongingness, it can boost self-esteem, it provides protection from existential threats, it promotes healing of the mind and body, it can improve mental and physical health and it encourages charity and altruism. Religion plays an essential societal role warranting special consideration. However, despite all of this, religion if misused or exploited can be the most dangerous and the most persuasive force on Earth. But at its best it can be the path of reconnecting a person to higher spiritual truth and the reason behind most loving and noble actions.

What does the moon mean to me?

It is pretty and it is cool but it is basically impossible to photograph it well enough with any camera I have ever had. The moon affects the tides but it also slightly affects the weather in a similar way. When the Sun and Earth line up and the moon is at its closest to the Earth, you can expect lower temperatures which is due to the combined gravitational pull of the moon and the Sun.

Here is the mind map I made trying to make connections between the moon(science) and religion. Today I learnt that I been making mind maps all wrong. I thought that they were supposed to be boring with words and, if you want, lots of words. Apparently they are meant to have pictures and colour as well as not straight lines to make them as creative as possible as well as increasing memorisation and effectiveness. Mind maps are supposed to increases association, imagination and creativity. They should only contain keywords and not heaps of notes. They were apparently created by Tony Buzan. Some people who have made quite good and creative mind maps are:

Franz Ackermann

Pam May

Mona Bradwilbadger

Cutis Tappenden

Any, here is mine:
