Today, we were given the task to choose a picture. I chose the picture about children's day because it seemed the lesser of two evils as opposed to pro-life/pro-choice. With the images we chose, we would make a group with people who chose the same picture. There was only one other person who chose the same picture as me. I particularly liked the children's day image because it had different flags on it which reminded me of languages, which I like. After we were in our self-chosen group, we were to peer-review the holiday of homework of each other. After that, we wrote some points on post-it notes to help the other person improve. My feedback was:
"Lots of detail and beautiful images. Improvements : Add poster pics to blog post."
Shortly after that, we were given forms to write actual feedback for the person to keep. These forms were then hole-punched and put into our folders. After break, we were given the task to individually explore different meanings behind the image that we had chosen then share what we thought with our group. We were also told to think about the issues the image might have been highlighting.
I think that the image that I chose makes you think about various things; diversity, racism, child labour, acceptance, ageism, equality and languages. It also made me think about white supremacy and about Asia which wasn't represented. I think the pros of the image is that it can show people that children around the world are equally important and to spread international awareness and togetherness. However, I think that although the picture calls itself "Universal Children's Day", it is quite unrepresentative of the world we live in, there are barely any countries that are not in Europe that are represented and there are no countries from Asia represented.
I think that despite all its shortcomings, the image is trying to promote positive values like acceptance, respect, cultural differences and welfare and understanding between children around the world.
After finding the pros and cons of the subject the image showed, we were encouraged to think about our subject and think about why people would be against our views. For me, it is recycling and I had already thought about some reasons so here they are below:
"It's a conspiracy."
"The scientists are lying."
"Someone is making a lot of money out of this."
"It doesn't concern me."
"The government just wants us to be obedient."
"We can't just listen to everything they say to us."
"Even if I do it, it won't make a difference."
"It's too late to change anything."
"It is not important enough, there are more important things to do."
After lunch we made fake news stories, here is a screenshot of what I did:
