Tuesday 10th November 2020

On Tuesday we had three main tasks; Create a mood board, create a chalk board brainstorm and create a series of self-portraits. For the self portraits I don't have much to say, I don't have the images to explain them but here is a loose explanation of what happened.

Self-portrait

For these, I brought some props but I didn't really need to use them. We were put in groups and we experimented with slow shutter speed, using acetate as an overlay and digital projection. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist and it can be drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. I can't do any of those except photography so that is what I would have gone with given the choice. Some artists known for or who have done self-portraits are:

Martin Fuchs

Andy Warhol

Cindy Sherman

Martin Parr

Ingrid Pollard &

Laurie Simmons.

We also tried to explore some spirit photography which was first notably used in the 1860s by William H. Mumler. Mumler discovered the technique by accident, after he saw a second person in a photograph he took of himself, which he found was actually a double exposure. It was very interesting to attempt and experiment.

These are the behind the scenes photographs.

Chalk Board Brainstorm

These are the steps I took to do this task:

Think of at least one idea. I thought of two. Then I looked at the rationale from the brief and used key words to begin my brainstorm around the title 'altered state'. I tried to use my reverse dictionary to extend by vocabulary but it wasn't useful in the end. I considered drawing images and illustrations but I can't draw and my ideas were very abstract. I took a picture of every change I made. We apparently have to create something with it. Here are some pictures...

Pin Board Mood Board

The pin up mood board was sort of similar to the chalk board brainstorm but I had some physical things prepared. I brought in some things that related to my ideas. Using the collected materials I started to compose my mood board using the pin board and pins. I brought sheet music things related to when I was younger than I am now and a newspaper. I didn't explore colours but I should have. Here is a picture of the mood board.
