On Friday it was a short day. We just finished some work and then had a lecture on the introduction to Contextual Studies, it was quite interesting. The lecture really made me think about art in new ways, considering whether graffiti is art and thinking about being more of a producer than a consumer.

Today we were given the task to take pictures around the cityscape as a sort of small scale tutorial of what we will have to do during the Margate trip. We were given four colours and were asked to take pictures of things that featured these colours within Rochester highstreet that followed a particular theme. We would then later be able to edit them if we wished but we were limited to 36 images. The four colours were red, yellow, blue and green. It was a really fun task and also allowed me to learn more about the places around me. As Robert Rauschenberg said "The artist's job is to be a witness to his time in history."
I used my camera to take a lot of pictures, however I was unable to properly upload them because my camera died. I put the SD card into the Mac and uploaded the pictures into my picture-taking partner's account. We edited one picture and I thought it was cool but although most of the other ones didn't need to be edited, I would have liked to have edited a few more. Unfortunately for me I nearly went all the way home without my SD card, but fortunately I stopped in Chatham and after twenty minutes of dilly-dallying, remembered that I didn't have it with me and had left it in the computer. I then had to walk back and retrieve it.
Back on the subject of the task, the theme that I picked was day-to-day life. This meant the things that you would see and interact with during a typical day out in your local town, for example a stop sign and some fruits. However, we did take a picture of something atypical and that was the Knife Angel in Rochester Cathedral. It was there to try and raise awareness of knife crimes and to try to promote a knife-free society. It was a really amazing piece of art and it was big. I wondered how many knifes the statue was made of, how the piece was put together and also what the different components of the statue were. N was the other half of my pair and while searching for exciting things to photograph, we stumbled upon a gallery at a Cafe Nucleus while following the scent of hot dogs. It was nice. We also realised that most shops in the highstreet weren't chain stores. It was something that I had never really thought about before and it was ice to think about.
I really liked this task. Down below you can see the pictures I took for the task and some other ones I took on the day.
